All US financial markets will be closed today in celebration of Thanksgiving Day

USA (Nov 28)  Prayers of thanks and special thanksgiving ceremonies are common among almost all religions after harvests and at other times. The Thanksgiving holiday's history in North America is rooted in English traditions dating from the Protestant Reformation It also has aspects of a harvest festival even though the harvest in New England occurs well before the late-November date on which the modern Thanksgiving holiday is celebrated.

THANKSGIVING HISTORY:  In the middle of the Civil War, prompted by a series of editorials written by Sarah Josepha Hale, the last of which appeared in the September 1863 issue of Godey's Lady's Book, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated on the final Thursday in November 1863.
