Turf war rages for South Africa's platinum unions

July 20, 2016

Johannesburg-SA (July 20)  Wage talks between the big platinum producers and the unions in South Africa are under way, and it is hoped that a repeat of the five-month strike that crippled the industry in 2014 can be averted.

But what has been confusing the situation is a growing turf war between the two main unions - the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) - in the country's platinum belt.
