Many of us who write about the precious metals field have put out their 2009 forecasts and predictions for the New Year.

Last week gold and silver remained in a trading range moving sideways, while crude oil had a large pullback on very heavy volume.

The Silver Institute just put out a press release which stated, "The silver price, per ounce, in 2008 averaged a strong US$14.98, a nearly 12-percent increase over the 2007 average price of US$13.38; the best average annual price since 1980.

Before sending me an e-mail telling me I am wrong, let me admit it!! I am WRONG—silver is not the only asset that is not someone else’s liability. But some of the staunchest “Gold Bugs” have it wrong and insist that gold is the only asset.

A confluence of factors suggests that we have just seen the bottom in gold and silver, or if not that the bottom is very close. The last update called the bottom too early as renewed dollar strength resulted in another downleg in the metals.

I started writing this piece as the sub-prime crisis was unfolding.

The gold and silver prices have broken out on the upside, not to register new highs but rather to emerge from a clear bullish wedge pattern in their daily charts. The stage is set for assaults on the 1000 gold high and the 21 silver high.
